Barclaycard ePDQ to be switched off

In March 2026, Barclaycard’s ePDQ gateway solution, also known as Smartpay Checkout, will be switched off.

This is an online payment solution provided by Barclaycard and is commonly used as:

  • Virtual Payment Terminal to process Mail or Telephone Order payments
  • Send links to customers by text message or email to take online payments, known as Pay by Link
  • Accept payments online through an integration into your website. There are also various ‘plug-ins’ available that use ePDQ on ecommerce platforms

As part of the switch-off process Barclaycard will also be closing any Merchant IDs (MIDs) associated with the gateway but other products are unaffected.

What this means

From 31 March 2026, businesses using ePDQ will no longer be able to take payments or offer refunds through their website. Transactions which have been authorised on ePDQ (Smartpay Checkout) will have to be settled before that date. They will also lose access to data or reports from 30 April 2026.

In its frequently asked questions document, Barclaycard said the closure was because of a “third-party supplier’s decision to stop supporting current integration methods”*. Now is the perfect time to consider your merchant services providers and what you want and need from a card payment system. Then you can make an informed decision about the switch before your gateway is turned off.

* Barclaycard FAQs published for affected customers, updated on 15 December 2025.
